Why Helping Matters—And Why It’s Needed

by Jun 10, 2025Fundraising, General, Giving

At Seeds of Hope, we talk a lot about giving—giving time, giving resources, giving food. But today, we want to share why this work matters—not just for those who receive help, but for those who give it, too.

The Truth About Need in Our Community

Hunger isn’t always visible. It doesn’t always look like the movies. Sometimes it’s a mom working two jobs who still can’t afford groceries after rent. It’s a family who lost their only car and now walks to school and work. It’s children going home from school on Friday knowing they won’t have enough food until Monday morning.

These are not people “looking for handouts.” These are our neighbors. Many are working—sometimes full-time—and still can’t meet their most basic needs due to rising housing costs, medical bills, or unexpected emergencies. According to Feeding America, over 44 million people in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2023, including 1 in 5 children. Locally, we see this reality each week.

There’s no easy fix. For some, “just getting a better job” isn’t an option. Barriers like lack of transportation, disability, language barriers, mental health challenges, or the high cost of college and childcare make it nearly impossible.

That’s why our Weekly Food Distribution every Thursday exists: to ensure no family in our area goes hungry. That’s why we created the Backpacks of Hope program to send food home with children over weekends and summer breaks. And that’s why we fundraise through community events like our annual Turkey Trot—to keep it all going.

Helping Helps You Too

We often say that helping others is good for the soul—and research agrees. Studies show that volunteering and giving back can reduce stress, combat depression, increase life satisfaction, and even boost your immune system. When you serve others, you build connection, empathy, and meaning.

We know asking can feel repetitive. But the truth is, our work depends on the kindness of others. Whether you’ve given money, time, canned goods, or simply shared our message—you are making a difference.

And if you haven’t gotten involved yet, this is your invitation.

Because when you lift someone else up, you rise too.

Thank you for supporting Seeds of Hope.
We believe in dignity. We believe in neighbors helping neighbors.
And we believe hope grows stronger when it’s shared.
