Looking for a meaningful activity for your kids this summer?
Here’s a challenge that teaches budgeting, smart shopping, healthy choices, generosity, and compassion – all while helping local families in need.
The next time you’re heading to Walmart, Aldi, Publix, Target, Dollar Tree, or your favorite grocery store, hand your child a budget and a mission.
- Maybe it’s $10.
- Maybe it’s $20.
- Maybe it’s $25.
Then challenge them to complete the Seeds of Hope Summer Scavenger Hunt!
Can they find:

- ☀️ Something for Lunch
- ☀️ Something for Dinner
- ☀️ Something Sweet
- ☀️ Something a Child Would Enjoy
Now comes the fun part…
- Can they stay within budget?
- Can they find sales?
- Can they compare prices?
- Can they stretch their dollars further than Mom or Dad thought possible?
For families with multiple children, make it a competition!
- Who can complete the challenge for the lowest cost?
- Who can find the healthiest choices?
- Who can create the most balanced donation box?
- Who can find the most fun items while staying within budget?
Middle school and high school students especially may be surprised by how much thought goes into feeding a family on a limited budget. What starts as a shopping challenge often becomes a lesson in gratitude, empathy, and understanding the needs of others.

🥣 Breakfast:
Oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix
🥪 Lunch:
Peanut butter, canned tuna, crackers
🍝 Dinner:
Pasta, rice, canned vegetables

🧸 Something a Child Would Enjoy:
Mac & cheese, applesauce pouches, cereal bars
